Producing “Brake Pads REALLY Made in Canada”, Guelph-based ABS Friction is an industry leader in the manufacture and testing of brake pads, currently supplying to over 20 unique markets around the world. Rick travels extensively internationally but enjoys that his commute from home to work is about 10 minutes.
A native of Guelph, Ontario, Rick is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo (BBA ’83) and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. Rick is proud to be alumni of Deloitte & Touche LLP where he earned his CA designation in 1985. Rick was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario in 2003. A student of entrepreneurship and a dedicated lifelong learner, Rick is a graduate of the Ivey Quantum Shift Program, a graduate of the MIT / EO Birthing of Giants program and an annual participant in the MIT GOT Entrepreneurs’ Conclave.

Rick serves his industry through participation as Board member of the AASA (Automotive Aftermarket Supplier Association), as current Chairman of the Brake Standards Association, as former President and Chairman of the Friction Materials Standards Institute and as former chairman of the Brake Manufacturer’s Council.
We consider Rick to be one of the driving forces in the North American automotive aftermarket and a leader in identifying industry trends. His intuitive insights have been sought out by government policy makers and industry executives alike. In 2012, Rick was recognized for his contributions to the automotive sector in Canada and was awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal, one of only 38 Canadians in the industry to receive this accolade.
Rick is passionate about the environment and works at re-designing processes so that they are both eco-friendly and socially responsible. When not at work, Rick loves his golf and is a member of 3 golf clubs. He is a past President and past Director of Guelph’s Cutten Fields and Wildwinds Golf Links.
To say the least Rick is a “high-energy.” He is occasionally sought out by the media to give his insights on how the Canadian Dollar impacts exporters. Rick is an excellent speaker who is willing to consider any speaking opportunity regarding the automotive aftermarket, entrepreneurship, the sale of a business to private equity, international business and a host of other things he is interested in return for a donation to his favourite charity.
